The Amherst Area Workers’ Rights Committee will meet on Wednesday March 2.
First Wednesday of the month, 6:30-8:00pm, Room 120, Hampshire House, UMass Amherst.
Enter Parking Lot 71 from Lincoln Ave. Parking is free on campus after 5:00pm.
United Auto Workers Local 2322 at UMass has made winning Just Cause a number one priority. We’ll help with that at tomorrow’s meeting.
Since April 2015, UAW 2322 has been bargaining a new contract for its unit of UMass Residential Advisors and Peer Mentors. The UMass Administration is adamantly opposed to including Just Cause in the contract. Without Just Cause, RAs and PMs can be terminated from their positions without any reason and without a fair process to appeal the decision. Just Cause is included in every other contract on campus, but the UMass administration is claiming that RAs and PMs – who are undergraduate students – are a “different kind of worker” that should not be entitled to the same type of job protections that are guaranteed to other workers on campus. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has ruled otherwise.
